Fiber FTTH, FTTC and VDSL: Differences and Verify Coverage
Providers in the beautiful country insistently advertise Fibre FTTC, although in reality many will still get copper with what would be better called VDSL.
At the time of subscription (at best) the type of connection available will be specified.
Let's see what the connection types are and how to figure out which one is available in our area
Currently in Italy FTTTH or VDSL2 (also commonly called vdsl)
- FTTS, FTTC, VDSL2: with these types of technology, the fiber goes up to the area cabin and the last part goes over copper (for Fiber optics Fastweb guarantees maximum 250m from the home)
- FTTB: the fiber goes up to the building (G.Fast)
- FTTH, GPON, XGPON:the optical fiber goes up to the customer's modem/router (the best solution)
You can find other wording such as:
- Fiber ILC: the meaning is a bit misleading, the optical cable goes all the way to the customer (as with FTTH), but the installation is made at the customer's request, it is an offer reserved for companies and has a high cost of activation (due to the need for design and excavation) and of the service fee. FTTH, GPON or 10G-PON?
often providers, such as Fastweb, call the connection "GPON," "XGPON," or "10G-PON."
These acronyms all refer to an FTTH-type connection. GPON is an ITU-T G.984 standard, an acronym for Gigabit-capable Passive Optical Networks (GPON). standard for passive optical transmission
The standard describes transmission characteristics, evolutions "XGPON" or "10G-PON," aim to carry more bandwidth over optical cable with transmission over longer distance
To elaborate further I leave you with this interesting wikipedia article, which discusses in detail the Passive Optical Connections
