Google Cloud in Italy the new region
Since June 15, the first Google Cloud region in Italy
In collaboration with TIM, the new europe-west8 location, located in Milan, consists of three totally independent zones.
The presence of data centers on Italian soil finally solves the problem of data sovereignty and GDPR compliance. To take advantage of this potential without incurring inefficient architectures or unexpected costs, we provide a specialized consulting on Google Cloud, designing infrastructure that allows you to benefit from the Milan region while maintaining full control over your IT resources.
However, true resilience requires independence: through our strategic cloud consulting, we analyze your infrastructure to assess whether GCP is indeed the best choice or whether a totally agnostic approach allows you to cut costs and avoid technology constraints (vendor lock-in).
Google Cloud in Italy
The presence of the new zone in Milan, reduces the already minimal latency, ensuring maximum performance in connecting to the cloud services and allows you to host data that cannot be exported, on Italian soil.
The europe-west8 Milan
The europe-west8 geographic area offers the computing services, such as Compute Engine, App Engine, CloudSQL, Kubernetes Engine, Cloud Run, and many others, with all the security and elasticity of the Google cloud
At the time of writing, Intel Xeon Haswell, Broadwell, Skylake, Cascade Lake server architectures are usable, and on the latest AMD EPYC Rome, AMD EPYC Milan
Available for archiving and databases, Object storage in Cloud Storage, MySQL and Postgres via CloudSQL, In memory databases including Redis and Memcached, tools for Big data and machine learning ML, such as Pub/sub, BigQuery and Dataflow
The Networking part, offers the full capabilities of GCP, Virtual Private Cloud (VPC) creation, Load Balancer, VPN connections, direct interconnect, peering...
In the dedicated page of GCP you can view all services available in the Milan region
The presence of data centers on Italian soil finally solves the problem of data sovereignty and extended compliance required for strategic architectures.
The Cloud Zones
The Google Cloud location in Italy, is based on the well-established infrastructure of hyperscale datacenters, is subdivided into regions and zones, each zone corresponds to a different `failure domain` and is built as a separate datacenter, with separate cooling, fire protection, networking, facilities, and electrical providers
This ensures even in the event of failure of an entire zone, that the disservice does not propagate to the remaining datacenters (zones), present within the affected region
The regions/zones architecture, typical in Tier 1 cloud providers, permits the distribution of workloads and the design of multi-zone architectures, within the same region, or in zones located in different regions, even on other continents
Through global networking, load balancing, and error detection, it is possible to maximize uptime, to guarantee stringent SLAs, by distributing services across multiple failure domains and load across multiple instances, even geographically far apart, ensuring resilience to disruptions caused by cascade failures and correlated failures
Live VM migration
Compute Engine, on which much of the Google Cloud computing offering is based, (such as for Kubernetes Engine GKE), offers by default live migration of Virtual Machines, in case of internal maintenance, without interruption or reboot of the VMs
Even in the rare case of a VM migration, most applications do not perceive the performance drop, due to synchronization of data and states to another location, and the instance remains online throughout the migration
