Fastweb VDSL, speed test, installation and features

We performed the installation of Fastweb VDSL fiber optics in Reggio Emilia, speed tests and configuration.
In the article we will evaluate the installation of Fastweb fiber optics, the speed achieved by speed test, signal quality, attenuation improvement with VDSL2 splitter and public IP enablement

The phone connection is traditional (POTS) but also provided VOIP the modem/router provided is a Pirelli ADB Broadband DV2200 that does not support VOIP

Fastweb Fiber Features:

  • 20 Megabits per second in download (maximum 2.5 Megabytes in download)
  • 10 Mbps in upload (which brings back to speed in maximum 1.25 MB in up)
  • With an addition of 5€/month (free the first 12) you can also activate the profile "Fiber 100" which allows you to have downloads up to 100Mbps (12,5 MB/s)

I remind you that 1 Megabyte (MB/s speed visible during download on applications) = 8 Megabits (Mbps speed reported in connectivities)

Offers of other operators:

  • Telecom All Fiber: 30Mbps download and 3 Mbps upload (3.75/0.375 MB/s)
  • Vodafone Super Fibra Family: 300Mbps download and 20 Mbps upload (37.5/2.5 MB/s) FTTH customers only
  • Infostrada Absolute Fibra: 100MBps down and 1 Mbps up (12.5/0.125 MB/s)

Assessing the stated speeds (not always actual) clearly the offer with higher bandwidth is Vodafone's, but for reasons of value for money and non-availability of FTTH, the choice fell on the Fibra ottica Fastweb
These offers change quickly and should be understood only as a comparison parameter
In this you will find the types of connection you can activate:
Type of Fiber Connection (FTTH, FTTB, FTTS, FTTC, VDSL)

Activation

Made brief, the steps for activation were as follows:

  1. Contact request from the website
  2. First contact from the call center (immediate)
  3. Second contact from the call center for data verification (time 1 week)
  4. Servant attests (6 weeks)
  5. Detachment landline phone (3 days)
  6. Receiving modem/router from the courier
  7. Detachment ADSL (4 days)
  8. Telephone activation and connection

From what is understood since it was asked several times Fastweb had problems with the migration code of the previous ADSL which was from a different operator than the telephone operator and when he went to activate he found the line busy, so that he had to ask for the second disconnection (data line) leaving the customer without a phone

I strongly recommend that you call during the "nerve-wracking wait" to remind you that you are still alive and would like to be connected, at least once every 10 days

Speed test fiber optic VDSL

We performed various speed test on the connection with satisfactory results

Speed test FastwebSpeed test fiberSpeed test fiber fastweb

The only problem encountered is in the late afternoon, probably due to the saturation of the network by home customers, the speed decreases in international connections
This seems to be an international peering problem, as the network expands this will improve or resolve

Improved signal

Over the days, we have noticed that during phone calls, the errors on the router increase and that often the line drops, the solution was to install this splitter:
Enerdom SAPV120 VDSL2 splitter: connection, installation and improvement of SNR signal and attenuation

Enabling IP exteno (public IP)

Fastweb keeps its customers in a MAN, a network visible only from within it and not directly exposed on the Internet, this blocks incoming connections such as VPN, remote assistance, p2p such as emule, Bittorrent... Fortunately you can ask Fastweb technical support to enable an "external IP address" in our case after about a week I was enabled a Static IP

Telephone Support

The Call Center operators (192193) who answered us were prepared, as far as we could test, this figure is clearly related to the type of contract that in this case is a home user
